Summer Help (Highway Dept)
Location:Highway Dept WR
FT/PT:Casual - up to 1,200 hrs/year

Job Responsibilities:
GENERAL FUNCTION
This highway position performs duties as assigned, and may include any or all of the following:  replace employees who are absent, bury dead animals, sweep intersections, hand mow, patch roads, drive truck, perform flagging duties, and cut brush at various Wood County locations.

SUPERVISES
No supervisory responsibility.

RESPONSIBILITIES
A. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Check truck, or light and medium level equipment points before operating (engine, tires, lights, etc.).
2. Operate industrial lawn mower and/or tractor for roadside maintenance.
3. Collect refuse and dead animals from assigned roadways and other similar manual tasks.  Check for road signs that may be down.
4. Sweep intersections, patch roads, tar cracks, and cut brush.
5. Coordinate traffic control (flagging).
6. Deliver fuel to worksites as needed.
7. Responsible to know and practice the Safety policies of the County.  Perform all job tasks in a safe and prescribed manner.

B. OTHER JOB DUTIES
1. Perform a variety of manual labor duties.
2. Operate hand and small power tools.
3. Communicate with general public when they may have a question, or refer to supervisors as needed.
4. Any other duties as may be assigned by supervisors.
 
Job Qualifications:
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent is required.  Must be 18 years of age.  Prior experience in a similar work environment preferred.  Requires valid Wisconsin driver’s license and safe driving record.  Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License with “B” endorsement highly preferred.  Demonstrated ability to drive trucks.  Ability to coordinate traffic control (flagging).  Candidates must possess basic everyday living skills, the ability to understand and follow directions (work assignments), the ability to read and write, add and subtract (using a calculator, time sheets).  Ability to work compatibly with fellow employees and the general public.  Skill in applying general first aid is useful.  

Skill in the use of the following hand and power tools, including but not limited to:  hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, saws, sanders, chain saws, shovels and brooms; highway construction equipment:  air hammer, material handling equipment, mower.  

Personal protective equipment used:  steel tip boots, hearing and eye protection, and safety vest.
